So This One Time...

...a show about awkward situations.

Over the last several months, Katie Coleman and Jane Garver have been collaborating with each other and many other people trying to collect the best stories about “bad” situations. All of the work in their show started with a true conversation or event, because true yet unbelievable stories are the most memorable.

The stories they tell range from the mundane to the ridiculous, often utilizing image and text to blur the lines between storytelling and visual art.

They will turn MINT into a staged home interior to house their strange cast of characters, and to give old stories a new context. To be clear, they are decidedly pro-awkward, highlighting how funny little memories or strange moments can be re-used to make a new shared experience.

Then and Right Fucking Now opens tonight!

Join us on Friday March 1st for an evening with Chuck McCarthy. You may know Chuck as the internet thinker responsible for www.ideasbychuck.com or the artist behind www.drawnika.com. In this one night event, McCarthy will show "Then and Right Fucking Now", a collection of his drawings and mixed media pieces, in conjunction with the launch of our Kitchen Annex.

Bingo! On March 26th from 3 to 6pm

We'll have one of a kind, handmade cards from local artists for sale for $5 each along with snacks, drinks, music and art.

Spirit Animals opens on March 12th

A "spirit" or "power animal" is a representation of a creature that represents one's connection to the world, life, the individual's personality traits, or power.

In the shamanic worldview, everyone has power animals or tutelary spirits which empower and protect them from harm, like guardian spirits or angels in the Abrahamic Traditions.

We asked artists throughout Atlanta to submit work inspired by their spirit animal. The exhibit will feature pieces from over 50 artists who work in a variety of mediums.

The night will also include a special vision quest led by The Back Pockets at 10pm.

Call for Artists!

MINT is organizing its first ever BINGO Fundraiser! We invite you to make up to five bingo cards for the event. There are no stipulations for what they look like, except that the cards can be no smaller than 4x6 inches and no larger than 8x10 inches. Feel free to have the playable bingo portion of your card(s) on one side, and your artwork on the other. Of course, submitted cards must be playable and they must follow standard bingo guidelines. You know what we’re talking about: there must be five columns and five rows with “B-I-N-G-O” at the top of the card(s) and the correct, corresponding numbers in each space of each column.

• Column B contains numbers 1 - 15
• Column I contains numbers 16 - 30
• Column N contains numbers 31 - 45
• Column G contains numbers 46 - 60
• Column O contains numbers 61 - 75

And, of course, don’t forget the “free” space in the center of the card, or the third row in column “N.”

Here’s the Skinny: The fundraiser will take place between 3 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, March 26, 2011. We will have tables set up inside & possibly outside (depending on the weather) for bingo, light snacks and beverages available at the bar, and a DJ spinning records in the back.

We will be selling cards at the door for $5 a piece starting at 3 pm until we are sold out. To be fair, all cards will be sold at random, so no choosing. Prizes will be provided by local businesses and given to the winners of each bingo round---picture frame, “X,” blackout, you name it.

For donating one to three cards, we’ll give you one free drink at the bar, but, for donating four to five cards, we’ll give you one free drink PLUS a free bingo card to play with or just to take home---though you really don’t want to miss out on the prizes. Trust us.

***Bingo cards MUST be dropped off at MINT before 5 pm on THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011.*** Also, they should have a label (post it note or something of that nature) on the back with your name, phone number, and email address.

MINT is open every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Feel free to stop by during our hours, or contact us in advance to schedule an appointment.

Boo Album/Zine Release party tonight!

We are excited to be hosting Boo's debut album release tonight at MINT. From the man himself:

"My album, Spiritual Machines, just "dropped" under my artist's moniker Boo and I'm celebrating with a party. There’s going to be some artwork hanging up, music playing and people dancing, wine being poured and snacks being eaten, all for the sake of enjoyment! This event is open to all sentient beings who like to have fun. So...you should definitely come. Yup yup!

"Coeducation" opens Saturday, February 12

"Coeducation", a joint exhibit from couple Chelsea Raflo and Chris Hamersly, loosely explores the dynamics of living and learning in close contact. The artists describe the process of creating the work for this exhibit as "a study in cooperation and collaboration as well as the simplicity of coexistence. Through working together, we found ourselves learning from each other, either through direct communication or just by way of... proximity and observation."

Raflo, an Atlanta native, graduated from Kenyon College in 2008 with a B.A. in studio art and currently works at Riot Atlanta, a creative post-production studio. She utilizes a variety of mediums in her work but for this exhibit, focuses on drawing and painting. Her work reflects an interest in the junction of the verbal and visual worlds. She has most recently exhibited in the MOCA GA "Movers and Shakers" group show and in a solo exhibit at Carroll Street Cafe. Her animation work has been featured on the IFC Sundance Network. Hamersly studied photography at Georgia State University and currently works as a screen printer at Danger Press. He works primarily in pen and ink. Past exhibitions include a solo exhibit at San Francisco Coffee Roasters and group shows at 11:11 Teahouse, MINT and MJQ.
